“Melanie’s Law” was signed into law on October 28, 2005. Its purpose is to enhance the
penalties and administrative sanctions for Operating Under the Influence (OUI) offenders in
Massachusetts. The information below highlights the new penalties under the law and those
sections that pertain to RMV suspensions.

Pretest training is available to all Union members. The Pretest instructors are UNION members whose job it is to train you with the proper test taking skills. We urge everyone to take the classroom training which will give you the insight beyond the material in order to qualify for all job families. (see below)
The Pretest training classes include those for the UTB-R (Universal Test Battery-Revised which has replaced the other initial test for employment). The UTB-R has seven sections which will qualify you for different jobs within the company. The test sections include: Reading comprehension, Math, Number Series, Spacial Visualization, Clerical Speed and Accuracy, Spelling, and C.A.B.L.E. (Which is similar to an interview). As you can see most of us have not done some of these basics in some time. Any training received can only benefit you.Take advantage of this opportunity to enhance your Union Career. Even though you may not think you need the test, you are eligible to take it now.

On October 22, 2008, the Department of Transportation issued a Federal Register Notice concerning direct observation (DO) of urine specimens collected for return-to-duty and follow-up drug testing. The effective date of 49 CFR 40.67(b), as amended by the Department on June 25, 2008, and delayed on August 26, 2008, is November 1, 2008. Beginning that date [November 1], DO collections will be required for all return-to-duty and follow-up DOT tests.

The following description of a “Scab” was written many years ago by Jack London, the famous novelist. It still holds good today.
“Portrait of A Scab”
After God had finished the Rattlesnake, the Toad, and the Vampire, he had some awful substance left with which he made a Scab.
A Scab is a two-legged animal with a corkscrew soul, a water logged brain and a combination backbone of jelly and glue. Where others have hearts, he carries a tumor of rotten principles.
When a scab comes down the street, men turn their backs, angels weep in Heaven and the Devil shuts the gates of Hell to keep him out.
No man has a right to scab as long as there is a pool of water to drown his carcass in, or a rope long enough to hang his body with.
Judas Iscariot was a gentleman compared with a scab. For betraying his master, he had character enough to hang himself. A scab has not.
Esau sold his birthright for a mess of pottage. J
udas sold his savior for thirty pieces of silver.
Benedict Arnold sold his country for a promise of a commission in the British Army.
The modern strikebreaker sells his birthright, his country, his wife, his children, and his fellowmen for an unfulfilled promise from his employer, trust or corporation.

From the highest rungs of the corporate ladder, Verizon executives look down on us and see only numbers. From the comfort of their modern day thrones in the high rises of the big city, they hear only what their bean counters tell them. And from the luxury of their private jets and limousines, they believe their sole obligations are to their stock holders and their bottom lines.
Down here in the real world of middle America......
WE SEE what those numbers represent. We see our co-workers. We see law abiding citizens who work hard everyday to provide for their families and who have dreams for their children's futures. We see our neighbors: Soccer coaches, PTA moms, community volunteers. We see home-owners and tax-payers and the consumers our economy depends on. We see the people who put their change in charity jars and their checks in the church collection baskets. WE SEE OUR COMMUNITIES!
WE HEAR the relief in a customers voice when they finally get through to a live person. We hear the smile they can't help when they realize that live person actually lives and works in their region.
We here the sincerity in the customers "thank you" when we explain their absurd phone bill, install their fios or fix their home phone line.
We hear the dial tone that started it all. The dial tone that still serves as the lifeline for so many and that Verizon wants to wash its hand of because the profit margin is not big enough.
WE BELIEVE that a corporation has an obligation to their employees, to their communities and to their country. We believe that Corporate greed is destroying America. That the trend of outsourcing work and the constant chase for cheaper and cheaper labor is destroying the American middle class. That the huge gap between the "have's" and the "have nots" in this country today is the stuff that revolutions are made of. We believe that for this Company to say "let them pay for their own healthcare" is the historical equivalent of Marie Antoinette saying "let them eat cake".
We believe that Verizon is a Multi-Billion dollar corporation BECAUSE of their Union work force...NOT in spite of it!
WE KNOW that if we stand together in unity we will prevail. That we can be the voice of reason against the tyranny that threatens to destroy the very fabric of this country, and that our voices will be heard around the world as we fight for the rights of ALL Americans to a fair wage, quality healthcare and job security. We will not allow this corporation's gluttony to outsource OUR AMERICAN DREAM so that they can hoard every last slice of that American Pie for themselves.
